    Payback time for crooks

              Suspected crooks are today paying the price for their ill-gotten gains.                                                  A Northumbria Police drive to seize the assets of those living the high-life beyond their means led to a series of arrests across the force area.                          As reported in yesterday's Chronicle, officers raided targeted homes of both low level offenders as well as those who profit from organised crime.                        Alain Silberstein Watch   In St James' Village, Gateshead, a 37-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were arrested and a red Mini Cooper convertible recovered and pounds 1,500 cash.                          In Winlaton one woman was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, and a Rolex watch together with designer handbags and clothes were seized.                                          A man claiming benefit in South Tyneside who has recently spent five weeks in a five star hotel in Thailand was also arrested. Inquiries are continuing into how the holiday was financed.                          A 52-inch plasma screen TV, other electricals and pounds 1,000 in cash was recovered. A Ford Focus was also seized.                          In Northumberland, pounds 4,000 in cash, a number of vehicles and a jet ski were recovered. Drugs, believed to be cocaine, were seized and two men arrested.                          Further arrests were made in Sunderland where two people were detained on suspicion of obtaining money Fake Louis Vuitton by deception and over pounds 3,000 was seized. In North Tyneside one man was arrested.                          Det Supt Mike Jones, heading Operation Payback said: "We're tackling local targets who are living a life of luxury from crime while their hardworking neighbours toil away. These are some of the first of many steps to start to redress that imbalance and show crime doesn't pay." Operation Payback is the culmination of a year-long asset recovery plan.
